Travels in New Orleans: Swamps

Photos taken on Saturday, 3 April 2010.
One of the must do's while in New Orleans is to go on a swamp tour. We toured Honey Island Swamp with Cajun Encounters. Since we were there in early April, the heat wasn't too oppressive. However, there were a lot of mosquitoes and they bite!  Here's a little tip: always wear insect repellent and wear long pants and long sleeved shirts.

We got picked up at the hotel.  Honey Island Swamp is located about an hour's drive from downtown New Orleans. Once we arrived we had a choice of going into a covered or uncovered boat. The guide, a local, was very knowledgeable. He pointed out the various vegetation unique to the bayou and did his best to spot alligators and other wildlife.  We saw 2 alligators as well as a few bald eagles and waterfowls.  I was hoping to see snakes (reported to be huge!) but the water was still too cold for the snakes (and the alligators) to be active.
